'Tis the season to be coughing...
Many of us find the winter to be hard on our voices. I often have a severe chest infection during this season.
There is a lot of bad advice going around about how to care for a sore throat.
One thing I was told to do was to drink warm tea with honey and lemon.
WRONG!
Although it tastes great, the lemon juice can dry up your vocal cords because of the citric acid and the honey can cause phlegm to build up.
We know that nothing we eat of drink passes over the vocal cords but it DOES get absorbed into the blood stream.
The best thing you can do for your voice is get lots of quality sleep and stay hydrated by drinking room temperature water if your home isn't too cold.
If you need to warm up the water, make sure it's not too hot. It should never be hot enough to burn your tongue.
If you do decide to drink some tea, make sure it's decaffeinated so it won't dry out your vocal cords.
